Two is better than one

I did not get what the fuss is all about until I tried it for myself. Having two computer screens is  better than (having just) one.

I’ve seen my husband use our Samsung lcd tv at home as an alternative monitor, in place of the 11 inch one on his Toshiba netbook.

He connects the mini laptop to the screen with a cable that would normally connect a cpu to a monitor, shuts the netbook and use an external keyboard to type.

We’ve been surfing the Net and watching YouTube videos this way for some time now. We’ve also been recording cover versions of pop songs and uploading them to his channel and mine.

My husband plays the guitar while I sing, my eyes fixed to the lcd screen reading out the words and the trusted Sony Nex5 records it all on HD. (More on this in another post!)

Two days ago, he took the Dell monitor that has gathered dust outside the room and placed it near my “home office” and hooked it up to my Mini HP.

He taught me how to set it up myself and voilà, the next morning at work I was doing it all on my own!

I might blog about this again and create a tutorial on it in my future Tools of the trade blog.

So you might wonder why I would need a second monitor.

Two monitors can be one giant, seamless screen

Well, I’ve found it useful when I’m writing, editing and proof-reading.

It’s really convenient to have the Oxford dictionary on one screen and the Word document on another. When I need to look up facts, I would minimise the dictionary and have the web browser on the screen. It’s really handy when you need to compare text.

I dare say that I save time with two monitors. For one, I don’t waste time dragging the mouse to the bottom of the page to pick a window because I can’t fit two of them in one screen.

I like the fact that combining two monitors gives me one big and seamless screen. I can open two web browsers like Firefox and Chrome, each on a separate monitor. No more having to minimise one window to view the other.

It might not sound like much but if you have tried it, you’ll notice the difference that introducing a second monitor brings.

Having two screens have given me an excuse to practise the keyboard shortcut command alt+tab.

Sometimes when you have too many windows open, it’s inconvenient to go back to the panel bar and click your desired window.

Pressing alt+tab eliminates your dependence on the mouse and is perfect for the two or more monitors situation.

So do try it yourself on your own desktop at home or the office. It takes less than five minutes to set up. So have fun with it!

Have you tried connecting a computer monitor to your laptop to create one giant and seamless screen? How has that improved your productivity? Let me know in the comment box!

How was your day?

There are days when you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. You leave your bed with little motivation and enthusiasm to go about your day that although nothing bad happens, (your day) just lacks that umph.

Other days, you wake up the moment that alarm clock rings and you immediately hop off the bed, sing or dance in the shower and proceed to have a mini-adventure of your own later that day.

I think I just had one of those days where I felt alive and chatty.

I had all reasons to be grouchy because I had to wake up at 5am just to make sure that I finish my work before 7am and have it ready for the boss to go over at 10am.

Plus, I had to rush all the way to Bandar Baru Sg Buloh to meet a class or Fifth formers who published a book, which is now in its second print. I’ll blog more about that some other day.

And then, I had to take the komuter to go back to the office and finish another piece of writing to be submitted before my sub leaves the office and takes the day off tomorrow.

But today, I also have a lot to be thankful for.

I work up at 5am and managed to finish my work within two hours  —  just like how I had planned. Normally, I would set the alarm at 5am and would hit the alarm and go back to sleep.

Then, my husband was free to send me to Bdr Baru Sg Buloh, so I didn’t have to take the train because I was running late anyway. We got to the school without any problems because I could find the school in the GPS and it took us right to it, right on time.

I had a blast talking to the students and some of the teachers who treated me to lunch. And then, one teacher — who was on the way home — was very kind to give me a lift to the komuter station.

I had to wait for only 15 minutes for the train to arrive and had a good chat with a Sixth former who was going back to her boarding school in Seremban. Before I alighted the train at KL Sentral, she actually salam-cium my hand as a sign of respect because earlier I had told her I was older than she thought. She thought I was a college student. Haha! That made my day 🙂

I got back to the office just in time to write the piece and still managed to leave the office at 6pm.

And when I got home, my mom-in-law had cooked yummilicious nasi ayam and I had that for dinner.

My day couldn’t be any better, really!

So I wonder what kind of day is in store for me tomorrow? Whatever tomorrow lies for me, I’ll start the day with a prayer and a rock-out session with my Disney princesses Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

I love my manufactured pop and rock songs 🙂

Guess who’s back in the mack

After spending hours in the office staring at the computer screen and pages for this weekend’s issue, the last thing I need right now is spending another 30 minutes or so staring at the screen writing this blog entry.

I got a shock (a pleasant one) looking at my dashboard. I knew that the layout for the page where I post my entries has changed but I had ZERO idea that the new dashboard has been pimped as well. Now I can tell who had recently linked me from their blogs/websites, how many blogposts I have so far — fyi it’s 542 (incl. this one), how many people read my blog on certain dates and my most popular post, which happens to be my review of Everyday Minerals makeup.

So, mineral makeup fans out there are gonna love this entry because *drum roll* I just got my package all the way from Austin, TX a couple of days ago. Actually, I could have picked it up on the 8th if I had wanted to but I was away in Hanoi. So, as soon as I had some free time on Wednesday, I laced up my walking shoes and speed-walked all the way to the post office (about a 10-minute walk). I swear I was back at my desk in less 20 minutes – the day was threatening to rain, so I HAD to walk fast.

After thoroughly enjoying my free samples kit last year, I decided to make my first purchase from Everyday Minerals website. I chose the personal custom kit (mini) where I get to pick 6 items from the categories below:

* Foundations
* Blushes and Face Colours
* Concealers
* Eye Colors
* Finishing Powders
* Lip Colors

and pay only US$18 (plus US$9 shipping and handling charges). For those living in Malaysia, that translates to around RM88. Not bad, huh?

Anyway, this time around, the products come in purple-lided containers weighing 4 grams each. They are the size of your average lip pots (lipgloss in pots) (see picture below which I lifted off Thank you for the picture!)

Everyday Minerals

The colours I picked were:

  • Medium Beige Summer and Sandy Medium for foundation in intensive (intensive refers to the formula and it’s suppose to be the best for oily skin like mine. Other formulas include matte, semi-matte and original glo)
  • Intensive Medium for concealer
  • Weekend Getaway and Apple for blushers
  • Cherry Fizz for lip colour

The morning after I picked up the package, I mixed both foundation and chose Weekend Getaway to complete my makeup. But mixing the foundations — which I thought would produce the perfect match for my skintone. Nope, not exactly, as I found out later. I looked too done up. But I loved my blusher which looked quite natural.

So this morning, I just went with Sandy Medium and what do you know, it’s quite close to my skin. I’m sure Medium Beige Summer isn’t too dark for me. It’ll be suitable for certain days when I need a little tan. I’m sure I’ll have one of those days 😛

I haven’t tried Apple because, frankly, it looks a little dark. Maybe it’s more suitable for night.

If you want to know how EM looks on my skin, just check out my current Facebook profile picture. In that photo, you’ll also notice that I am sporting a new hairdo. So far, I’ve got positive comments from people. I suppose if they have nothing nice to say about my hair, they probably won’t say anything *lol*. But I like my hair. If I had it my way, I would prefer a bob better but this cut is suited for my curly/wavy hair type. At least I don’t have to tie my hair when I run/walk on the treadmill. When I wash my hair, I use less shampoo and it takes less time to dry as well. I don’t need to use pomade to flick the ends of my hair because my natural curl does it for me FOC in my sleep 😛 I wake up and voila… instant swingy, bouncy curls.

Speaking of curls, today a colleague asked me if I had permed my hair? Hahaha. It’s all natural, baby!

I think I look boyish with this cut. Someone in the office says it makes me look younger than I already do. And my husband swears it makes me look taller(?!). Whatever!

I actually love long hair but I think I needed a makeover. Seven years is too long to have the same haircut, don’t you think?

Anyway, I do mean to post pictures from Hanoi soon. I still had long hair then. Right now though, I am too exhausted to even finish this entry and go grab a glass of cold water to drink. I promise, promise to do it before the end of the weekend. The Internet has been really good here in the new house so that’s a motivation to get it out of the way.

Ok, I’m so tired that the speaking voice in my head (which is narrating this entry) is slurring 😛 Night night then!

Good luck to you man!

I got a little scared when a colleague — not Si Polan — told me she read my blog (about Si Polan).

At first I felt that I may have done the wrong thing when I blogged about Si Polan. Then I realised that I’m actually doing many people a favour.

I seriously don’t want other people in the office to fall for his “over promise under deliver” ways. In our business, being reliable is everything. I mean, we rely on reliable sources and be accountable for our work. So his “say one thing, do another” trait is totally not on.

Although it’s terribly embarrassing for him, I swear it is THE TRUTH. I did not embellish anything about the events which had happened. I didn’t name my blog The truth and nothing but the truth for nothing you know!

In case he or his friends are reading, do know that the news desk have discussed him, in passing, in their meeting last Friday. They thought he was on leave but discovered that he was AWOL. I’m not exaggerating y’all! Literally, absent without leave.

For the record, he never showed up after being told that he was now in a new department.

On Wed at noon, he informed us that he was on MC. A few hours later, he was informed by my boss that he has to report to the new section the next morning at 9am.

9-ish the next day, he sms-ed me for my boss’ number. I replied and he sms-ed her that he was shocked by the news she conveyed her yesterday and that he needed a day to think about things and to please convey his message favourably to his new section.

She told him that she’s no longer his superior and he’d better come in to the office that day (I was gonna say he’d better get his ass to the office pronto but that would be embellishing *lol*) as it is the decision of the top bosses. We didn’t see him at all that day or yesterday.

Do know that former staff who have caught whiff of this fiasco are having a good laugh. Just like in the old days, they’re betting on how long he will survive. They think he ain’t gonna show AT ALL. A very competent writer at the office thinks he “will die” at the new section. She’s female and she survived no problem. So, ada berani?

If you’re reading this, dude do the right thing. The last I check, you still have a job. Be a man and face the music. If you think you’ve been victimised, read through your employment contract and I think you will see a clause about transfers and that sorta thing. Many people have had some of their best memories in news. Try it, you might even like it. But whatever you do, take on the challenge or leave the establishment, wake up and smell the roses. Clean up your act, keep your nose clean and please, no more empty promises. You owe it to yourself to change a new leaf this 2008. Good luck to you man!

This is weird.

Dexter and Deedee are sleeping earlier than me. As I write this, Deedee is curled up at her favourite spot – the roller ball – on the first floor, whereas Dexter is on the ground floor sleeping next to the food container. Hmmm… I thought hamsters sleep during the day??

Anyways, I am tired but not sleepy yet. Just came back from bant1ng where my husband spent the entire time babying the pet monkey his cousin’s uncle keeps. They named the monkey (kera) Bu/sh after Ge0rge Bu/sh. He’s the cutest little thing. He’s less than six-months-old I think and is absolutely manja. He is so childlike and by that I mean like a human child. He gets upset if he thinks that my husband is leaving his side and insists of literally hanging on to him. So by the time we came back to SA, both of us smelled of monkey and by that I mean of mild BO. It’s true! That’s the only way I can describe the smell of a monkey.

So both of us duly showered to get rid of the “stench” once we got home.

It has been a long day because we’ve been out of the house since noon. We went to the family carnival organised by B/H and had fun. They cancelled the married couple karaoke contest because the organisers were running out of time. I just wished they had made official announcement to inform that it has been cancelled, though. But I’m glad I went to the family carnival because I got to see performances by An1ta Swk, M1sha 0mar and Datuk S1t1 Nurhal1za. An1ta or kak n1ta as she is fondly known amongst her fans is so small in person. She has the figure of a girl in her late teens/early 20s, I kid you not. And she is what… 65?

I’m glad I got to see M1sha 0mar perform live for the first time. I really love her voice. But I thought she chose the wrong song to perform. She should have sung Nafas Cahaya after she did Berdua Lebih Baik, that Indonesian number, instead of Ku Seru the sequel to her famous Pulangkan. The song is too slow for a family carnival.

And it is also nice to see S1t1 Nurhalz1za perform. She looked AND sounded great. She sang her Siti Situ Sana Sini, followed by a number written by Yassin and duetted with our topmost boss on My Heart.

Speaking of duets, BH’s big boss duetted with the vile Maw1 on the song Lagu Cinta. Yes, all our bosses are gila glamour great singers. Seeing Mae1 needing “high” security made me want to hurl. Like, please lah! But people were crowding him so I don’t blame the fella. But his popularity was clearly overshadowed by S1t1 because people were literally crowding the stage to take pictures as she sang. People only crowded around Maw1 AFTER he sang. So what do you think of that Maw1? Still think you’re the biggest thing in Msia?

Hehehe… Emosional pulak 😛

So that was basically my Sunday.

P/S: Deedee and Dexter must have been sleep walking because now they’ve moved spot (on the same levels which they were on earlier) and they are back to sleep again.

Call me karaoke queen

Why? Because I’ve made a vow to enter all the amateur karaoke contest (especially for media) that I can 😛

After the NPC-D1g1 contest which I entered last month — in which I won third place 😦 — I signed up for another competition taking place tomorrow. BH is organising its family carnival in conjunction with its 50th anniversary tomorrow and they are organising lots of activities for the entire family. One of them is the husband-and-wife karaoke contest 😛 I have no idea what the prizes are (I hope it’s cash and lots of them) but I had convinced my husband that we must, absolutely must enter. When I signed up, there were only about three or four other couples. I think they’re looking for 10.

BH family carnival

It’s funny though because no one called us to reconfirm the details, although I had left our details in the form. All I know is that the contest starts at 2pm. So, we’d better leave the house tomorrow just before noon. We’re probably going to sing Jangan Ada Dusta, a duet by Broery Marantika and Dewi Yull. It’s a slow ballad which is not so hard on the larynx – because husband can’t really hit the high notes – and soothing to the ear.

Well that is tomorrow.

Last night, I entered a contest during the Gold3n Hop3 media night and won…(drum roll please) first place! Woohoo! I got a RM500 JJ shopping voucher. Not bad eh?

Golden Hope

Two years ago, I entered the same contest, got second place and won RM700 worth of shopping vouchers. Nampaknya, nilai hadiahnya sudah merosot. But at least I got RM500. Who is going to give me that much cash to shop, right?

I don’t have anything specific to shop for. Maybe I’ll buy something frivolous with it like clothes 😛 I heard JJ is having a sale now. Can I say perfect timing?

Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing

Thanks to P@m, a graphic artist at the office, I am now enjoying (uninterrupted) music again the office. *after Yahoo! music was banned from the office server*

Last Friday, she helped do one of the pages for the pull-out. While I was putting in the changes to the article on the screen, she chatted on YM and played music on her mac machine. I asked her if the songs were from her MP3 player. She told me they were from this website:

Try it!

I would suggest that you sign up for the service – it’s free – in order to save your own song list. It’s saved under favourites.

The website’s pretty simple to navigate. There’s a search box somewhere at the top of the webpage. Just key in your desired song title or artiste and press enter. To save the song on your list, simply click on the “heart” icon and give it a few seconds to turn pink. Once it turns pink, that means the song has been saved on your list.

You can even detach the jukebox from the webpage, much like your google chat box, to allow you to continue using the window to surf other websites without interrupting the music.

I would say that the sound quality ranges from Good to Excellent. Rarely would the music stop halfway to “buffer” like youtube at the office – and I mean r.a.r.e.l.y.

Right now I have Pan1c! At The Disco, Par1s H1lton, L1ndsay L0han, H1llary Duff, Kelly Clarkson, S1t1 Nurhal1za, J0j0, Mar1ah Car3y, Christ1na Agu1lera, Stac1e 0ricc0 and Korean singer Ra1n on my

Who do you have on yours?

Anyway, this here is my current favourite song from Pan1c! At The Disco. Enjoy!

“But It’s Better If You Do”

Now I’m of consenting age to be forgetting you in a cabaret.
Somewhere downtown where a burlesque queen may even ask my name
As she sheds her skin on stage
I’m seated and sweating to a dance song on the club’s P.A.
The strip joint veteran sits two away
Smirking between dignified sips of his dignified peach and lime daiquiri

And isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

But, but I’m afraid that I
Well, I may have faked it
And I wouldn’t be caught dead in this place

Well, I’m afraid that I
Well, that’s right, well I may have faked it
And I wouldn’t be caught dead in this place

And isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Well, I’m afraid that I
Well, I may have faked it
And I wouldn’t be caught dead in this place

Well, I’m afraid that I
Well, that’s right, well I may have faked it
And I wouldn’t be caught dead in this place

And isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety
Oh, isn’t this exactly where you’d like me
I’m exactly where you’d like me, you know
Praying for love in a lap dance and paying in naivety

Praying for love and paying in naivety
Praying for love and paying in naivety, oh
